Whatever Happened To Masculinity?

Like I have said before, there are many things with which I disagree with Chuck Baldwin.  But when I agree, I really agree.  This commentary is one in which I agree whole heartedly, so I had to post it.  Enjoy

By Chuck Baldwin
January 26, 2006

The recent Hollywood infatuation with homosexuality is only the latest example of how true American manhood is being systematically dismantled. Throughout our culture, masculinity is de-emphasized, even scorned.

I well remember how Ronald Reagan was castigated as being "too masculine." Truly, Reagan was the last masculine president America has had (and maybe will have). Can you imagine what today’s generation of soft Americans would think of Harry Truman or Theodore Roosevelt?

Daily Thoughts

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.

New Orleans Trip Countdown

Twelve days and counting for the Hurricane Katrina relief trip to New Orleans (see more stories here).  Everything seems to be going according to plans.

I always have that little feeling in my stomach that everything may fall apart at the last minute.  But just like most other things in life, it will most likely work out just great.

I also have the weird feeling like I am forgetting something.  Like I have said before, I am not a detail guy and for the most part my wife pulls my butt out of the fire whenever it needs saving.  But she is not going to be on this trip and for the most part she is not involved at all.  Lord help me!!!  If any of you have any great checklists or suggestions for making a trip like this work well, please contact me.

If anything weird happens I will try to keep you all up to date.  I am not sure if I will have any computer access while on the trip at all, so I may not be able to post anything.

Keep moving forward.  Urban Impact and New Orleans, here we come.

Roe v. Wade anniversary

On this 33rd Roe v. Wade anniversary I would like to do a little math.

Abortion has been "legal" for 33 years now.  According to the many sources (do your own research if you don’t believe me), in the US there are approimately 3000 abortions per hour.  There are 365 days per year.

So 33 * 3000 * 365 = 36,135,000 abortions since 1973.  This is actually a very conserverative estimate (but what the heck, Im a conservative).

According to liberal propaganda, they want abortions to legal, safe and rare.  The question for you today is, do you think 36 million abortions in 33 yrs is rare?  The proaborts are telling a big lie.  How long with you believe it?

VIRTUS: Protecting God’s Children

The American Catholic Bishops adopted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People during their Dallas meeting in 2002.  It was updated recently in 2005.  The creation of this Charter was in reaction to the priest sex abuse scandal.  The result of this Charter is the requirement that each diocese must establish and implement a "Safe Environment" program.

If you’re receiving this and you’re in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, you recently received the letter from Archbishop Harry Flynn along with the VIRTUS parent’s guide.  If you are a parent who is just too busy to get involved and you think, "oh, the school and Church will look out for what’s best for my child," please consider reading just some of the articles contained in this document.

As parents, we are the ones ultimately responsible for our children’s upbringing.  We will be held to account for what they are taught and exposed to especially in their early years.  We are not to delegate the tough decisions to Bishops, priests, adminstrators or teachers.  We must make the judgement on what’s right and wrong for our children.

There have been many e-mails flying around with various articles and stories about the various programs offered under the guise of "safe environments" programs.  I thought it might be easier for everyone if you had one document that you could turn to for more information.  I imagine when you open this, it will seem like an overwhelming number of articles.  Please don’t think you need to read them all…just start with a few to get the flavor of what’s coming to a diocese near you.

The best way to start to dig in would be the first set of articles under the heading of "Criticisms of Safe Environments…"  The articles are attached in an Excel file (Download Protecting_God_s_Children_Articles_1_16_06.xls )  as well as a pdf  (Download Protecting_God_s_Children_Articles_1_16_06.pdf  ).    (I prefer Excel, but I realize not everyone receiving this has Excel…the pdf has small type…sorry, but that’s the best I could do).

A "safe environment" program will be implemented in the Twin Cities during the ’06-’07 school year.  All Catholic school, religious ed, and home schoolers will be required to participate starting in Kindergarten (and perhaps pre-school).  We may be able to opt our children out but there is a specific 4 step process that must be followed (Office of Child and Youth Protection).  However, Archbishop Flynn has the ultimate say.  If he chooses not to allow parents to opt out, your child will participate in "safe environments" training.

Be vigilant.

In Christ,

John Murphy

Movie Review: End of the Spear

Last night my wife and I went to the newly released movie End of the Spear.  It is basically the story of 5 missionaries that are speared to death in the Jungles of Equador by the Amazon river by members of the Waodani tribe, but that is only the beginning of the story.

These missionaries were attempting to communicate with these brutal people.  The five men knew the work was very dangerous but they chose to do it any way.

While the movie itself is not a technically perfect movie it is certainly very good from a technical level.  The real power of the movie comes from the story itself.  The story is told by the son of one of the men that were speared to death.  Who with his mother and several other wifes of the men that were speared decide to go in an live with these very superstitious people.

The story is such a powerful story of courage, grace, love and redemption.  To me, this is a movie of a generation.  Not only because it is well done, but because it is true.

This is a must see movie!!!!

Italian Lawyers Asked to Prove Jesus Existed

Now this will be cool.  The proof is Jesus’ existence is easy.  Then the real question becomes is he who he says he is?  The Son of God or part of the Trinity.  Making him indeed God himself.  This is going to be so much fun to watch.

My has Itally and Europe fallen far.  The great news is people will be discussing the evedience for Jesus in public!  Awesome.

Link: Italian Lawyers Asked to Prove Jesus Existed.

ROME — Lawyers for a small-town parish priest have been ordered to appear in court next week after the Roman Catholic cleric was accused of unlawfully asserting what many people take for granted: that Jesus Christ existed. The Rev. Enrico Righi was named in a 2002 complaint filed by Luigi Cascioli after Righi wrote in a parish bulletin that Jesus did indeed exist, and that he was born of a couple named Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem and lived in Nazareth.

This Sounds like Winston Churchill: Never Give Up

The news from Pakistan this week about the US firing a missle into a suspected site of the #2 al-Qaida man was reported from the MSM as a huge mistake and a terrible tragedy.  But the facst are a bit different.  It turns out we have gotten several very high ranking al-Qaida leaders in the process even though we may not have gotten the #2 guy

it should reassure all Americans that the Bush administration has not backed down from pursuing the war on terror despite all the criticism, second-guessing and roadblocks and hurdles thrown at Bush by his Democrat Party opponents.

To me this sounds like Winston Churchill.  Read the complete commentary, Never give in, never give up.

Best Predictor of Success

What is the best predictor of success is life?  Is it intelligence?  Is it good looks?  It appears (as common sense would point to anyway) that self discipline, self sacrifice and hardwork are the number one predictor of success.

The question is, how do we use this knowledge to improve our failing schools and help the poorest in our communities?

Washington Post Columnist Jay Mathews in his article America’s Best Schools tackles that very question.

The Knowledge Is Power Program, called KIPP (rhymes with hip), appears to be the most interesting and successful attempt so far to raise the achievement of low-income, minority children. Since finding ways to help poor students learn has been the central theme of my reporting for the past two decades, I have been giving KIPP a great deal of attention.

One of the Five Pillars they conceived as the heart of their system was focusing on results. They have been publishing annual report cards on their schools since KIPP began to expand in 2001 with the financial backing of Gap stores founders Doris and Don Fisher.

Check out the entire article. You may need to sign up (for free) for the washington post online to be able to read it.

New Orleans Trip Count Down.

Seventeen Days and counting until we leave for our Hurrican Katrina Relief trip to New Orleans.

Progress continues to be made on the plans for our trip.  I have some important news to communicate with all of you.

1.  Due to budget adjustments and responsible planning (not on my part I assure you) it looks like the trip is going to be costing us less than expected.  Yeah

2.  The missions council will be buying all the mold masks that are required so don’t worry about purchasing those.  This will be done for you.

3.  If you hear of anyone that wants to contribute money to the trip as a love offering or whatever please have them contact me, Gary S or Fella.  We would like to be able to provide supplies for the Urban Impact free store down in New Orleans.

4.  Remember the team blessing and send off at both services on the 29th and the meeting in between.

This whole thing is coming quickly.  Wow, when I am going to get ready for this?  Honey I need some help….

Thought Of The Day

God does not die on the day when we cease to believe in a personal deity, but we die on the day when our lives cease to be illumined by the steady radiance, renewed daily, of a wonder, the source of which is beyond all reason.

New Orleans Trip Count Down

The count down to our departure date for the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina Relief trip has started.  We have just 18 days and counting.  Mission control will commence control at T minus 4 days.   I just had to throw this in for effect.

Things are going according to plan.  We have a team of 10 women and 9 men signed up to go down there.

We have been made aware of the extra mold danger that is in place and we are acting to take precautionary measures.

Here is a list of expectations while we are there and a list of things to bring provided by Urban Impact.
_______________

What to expect at Castle Rock Community Church/ Urban Impact Ministries in New Orleans,  LA:
• HOUSING: Housing is in our ministry house which has triple bunks in separate men’s and women’s rooms with separate showers on each side.  For large groups we also have additional floor space with air mattresses.
• FOOD:  Meals are provided Monday through Saturday.  Breakfast is at 7:00 AM and Dinner is at 6:00 PM.   Lunches are sack lunches on site.  A continental Sunday breakfast will be available, but lunch and dinner are not.  Plan to eat out with your team for these Sunday meals.
• TRANSPORTATION:  Each team is responsible for their own transportation.  Keep in mind that each team will need to have transportation to their assigned work sites daily.  It is also helpful to have a pick-up truck for hauling supplies.  Please explore renting a truck for transporting supplies to the work-sites.
• LAUNDRY:  YES!  We have laundry facilities on-site for limited use, (see “T-SHIRTS” below).
• ARRIVAL:  Plan your trip so that you arrive between 7:00AM and 9:00 PM.  Your adherence to this schedule is invaluable to our staff and other teams needing sleep!
• WHAT WILL WE BE DOING? Teams are assigned work projects each morning and return every evening before dinner.  Types of work include debris removal, tree/yard/street clean-up, cleaning/gutting out flooded homes, help with free store and specific construction projects.
• WHAT AGES CAN COME?  The work is hard.  We prefer groups to be at least college age and older.   High school students may come only if they are accompanied by their parent.  Please NO Junior High Students.
• ARE THERE HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS?  Yes!  Anyone with mold allergies should be cautious about coming, but not discouraged.  There are some service projects around the ministry not involving mold.  Tetnus shots should be updated before arriving.
• FLEXIBILITY:  Team members should be ready to be flexible and eager to serve in a variety of tasks and areas as needed.
• TRAINING/DEVOS:  Your time will include some orientation, training and daily devotions.
• T-SHIRTS:  We have a Work Team Shirt that we provide for everyone to wear on the job-site, and you can wash them each night.
WHAT TO BRING:
• Bedding (Sheets & blanket or sleeping bag, and pillow)

The left hates inequality, not injustice

Dennis Prager hits the nail on the head again.

To understand any political ideology, one must understand what most animates it. For the Left, it is hatred of inequality. As noted in a previous column, the Left hates inequality even more than it hates evil. Or perhaps more accurately, for the Left, inequality is the ultimate evil.

Complete story here: The left hates inequality, not injustice.

New Orleans Mayor: Storms Sign ‘God is Mad At America’

The Mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin really seems to be a colorful guy.  It is OK for him to say that God is Mad at America and he gets a pass from all the liberal press and all the liberal politicians.  But If Pat Robertson says anything stupid like this they are all over it.  Not only that But he also said that New Orleans is going to be a "Chocolate City" and a black majority.  My question is why does race matter?

Link: New Orleans Mayor: Storms Sign ‘God is Mad At America’.

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities, too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting.

So what is it liberal press, is God mad at us or not?

Digital Photography Tips ~ From Steve

Digital Photography – Want Better Colors?

Have you ever come upon a scene where the color was just magnificent? You know, it was like all of the colors seemed to have been "turned up" a notch or two. The greens were vibrant, the blues were striking the reds were intense—you get the picture.

If you’re like me, it’s almost impossible to keep your camera put away at a time like this, so out it comes and a shootin’ you go.

Now for the big question: After you get home, do the colors on your computer screen appear somewhat less than dramatic?
