If you recall a team from South Suburban Evangelical Free Church in Minnesota recently went on a trip to New Orleans to perform some Hurricane Katrina relief work and to care for some of the people effected by the storm and the flooding. Well the team is back and people are starting to put together different items to help communicate our trip to others.
Laurie Jorgenson put together a compilation of photos that tells some of the story pretty well. You can find those photos here….
Thank you Laurie.

February 4th – February 12th 2006
We left the parking lot of South Suburban on a very chilly Saturday morning. We drove in three different vans. At our lunch stop in Mount Pleasant, Iowa Ken discovered that his alternator was going out. The Wal-Mart oil change center called a local repair shop owner and he opened up the shop and changed the alternator at a very reasonable price. This was one of many “coincidences” that we saw God’s hand on us. We got past St. Louis and stopped for the night. The cold front that had come through Minnesota extended down and it was in the low 30’s.
New Orleans: Making Progress

You have of course heard about Scott Ritter. You know the guy that was so mad about how the weapons inspections had been cut short before the Iraq war. But have you heard about Bill Tierney? Bill was a weapons inspector right along with Scott Ritter in fact they are pretty close friends. Bill also traslated the secret SADDAM tapes that talk all about Saddam’s WMD program and the methods they used to keep the UN from finding them.

LOS ANGELES – Herbalife International thrived under founder Mark Hughes. Handsome, young and buoyed by his rags-to-riches story, Hughes built a billion-dollar business over two decades by inspiring legions of people around the world to buy and sell his nutritional supplements and other health products. But his death in 2000 from a drug and alcohol overdose sent the company reeling.
Sales lagged in the U.S., Herbalife’s biggest market, as the company tried to manage without Hughes through a shuffle of top management that ultimately opted to sell the company.
Five years later, Herbalife is in the throes of a dramatic turnaround that has seen it post record sales, double its stock price and gear up to conquer what could be its largest market yet — China.

Random thoughts from the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina Relief Trip
Saturday 2/4/06
Everyone showed up at the church on time so that we were able to leave by 6:00 am sharp. We left with light snow showers and a temperature of 8F.
Shortly after leaving there was word going around the three vans that we were caravanning in that we had forgotten one of Laurie J’s bags. So my odd mind immediately goes to the vision from a movie like summer vacation that on the next day, Sunday, people will arrive at church to the show of Laurie’s underwear hanging on the flagpole. Well needless to say that pretty much started the tone of the trip. We laughed so much on this trip that I think I gained some new laughing muscles.
Of course we had a few more stop breaks that we would have expected. There are always more potty breaks than you plan for.
Note: After we got back from the trip I learned that one of the people from the Church leadership team showed up at 5:00 am to see us off. Oooooppppsss, I guess we had a slight communication snafu.
For this trip, we decided to take three vans. Being we have so many large families in our church there are plenty of large (12 plus) passenger vans. So, we only had to rent one van. Well one of the vans that was owned by member of our church had an electrical problem while we were in the middle of Iowa. The alternator was not charging the battery. This is on a Saturday afternoon in Mount Pleasant Iowa where everything should be closed. Well, this small town did have a Wal-Mart so we decided to go there and buy a battery so we could keep driving and then charge both batteries at night. While we were at Wal-Mart, the worker there told us about a friend of his that has a car fixit place that he would be willing to open up for us and replace the alternator. The guy was able to get the part and install it. It only took about 45 minutes to make that all happen so we were back on the road and actually back on schedule after that incident.
While the van was getting fixed we were waiting at a local gas station. In the gas station they had a beer display that was in the shape of a heart. This was the perfect display for the up coming holiday. So we thought that it might be fun to get pictures of the display and make a card for our loved ones for Valentines Day. Maybe with a slogan something like, “When I drink this much beer I think of you.” More laughter ensued.
For dinner that night we stopped in the town of Sikeston Missouri at a place called Lamperts Café. The home of the throwed rolls (www.throwedrolls.com). This place was a complete hoot. This is a Minnesota phrase meaning it was a ton of fun. The place is a large restaurant with a very fun atmosphere. Of course one of the things they to there is throw your dinner rolls across the room to you. The food was very southern and remarkably good for how big the place was and for how many people they pour through the place. Some of the items on the menu were catfish, liver and onions, fried okra, backed sweet potato and friend everything.
We stayed at a motel with a number in the name (eg Super 8) in Sikeston.

On our recent Hurricane Katrina relief trip, we were tasked with gutting flood damaged houses with and for some of the local residents. After working in our first house for a while and being quite depressed, we had a vision of hope.
There are certianly more hints of hope in a devestated city…. More to come soon.
We have just finished the work part of our journey to New Orleans. We have already sent two of our teammates to the airport to fly back home. It is amazing how fast this week went.
Over the next few days I will be attempting to post my memories and impressions of the trip. I will also be posting some of the best of the best pictures of the trip.
We are on our way home tomorrow. Some are alreading talking about the next trip here. There is just so much to do and most of the people are quite appreciative.
More later.

Just two more days until we leave on our Hurrican Katrina Relief adventure to New Orleans. The team currently consists of 9 women and 9 men. I must say I am a bit surprised how balanced the team is. We will be leaving at 6:00 am sharp from the parking lot of our church. All systems are a go!
I woke up this morning with an incredible peace about the trip and the plans and all the stuff that is around here that I will be leaving behind for a period of time.
There are several things that I will miss quite a bit. Obviously my wife and family. The comforts of middle America etc. But there is one unusual thing that I know I am really going to miss. I am going to miss my flickr community. I know, call me insane but it is true. I have build some pretty special relationships out in that cyber world and I will have withdrawals from them. I am addicted. Also, I have learned so much about photography from the great people out there. So, to may flickr community, I will miss you.
New Orleans and Urban Impact here we come.
If you are still on the sideline with your Gold investments consider this…
Link: Newsletters are going for the gold.
With the price of gold near a 25-year high and even the most bullish gold-timing investment newsletters counseling caution, you might think staying away from the yellow metal was a good idea.
In fact, now may be a good time to buy, according to a market-timing theory known as contrarian analysis, which in essence holds that the market rarely accommodates the majority.
And even though the average gold-tracking newsletter is skeptical, recommending that two-thirds of precious-metals-oriented portfolios be kept in cash, editors of these investment products haven’t jumped completely off the bandwagon yet.
Everyday investors have more ways than ever to play the gold market, including buying the physical metal through an exchange-traded fund called the streetTRACKS Gold fund (GLD)
In the for whatever it is worth category, in my humble opinion it is no where close to too late. The entire economy is in a state of massive flux with the trend of interest rates of being generally up. When interestest rate trends are up, stocks and real estate generally lag. Remember, the trend is your friend. Go with the trend until it changes.
Here is a boycott I can certainly support!

Five days and counting until our group leaves on our New Orleans Hurricane Katrina Relief trip. We had one person drop out at the end of last week for personal family reasons so we are at a team of nine women and nine men. It has been remarkable to me to see this team form. Both to see the people that are joining the team and the sacrifices that are being made to be on the team. This is awesome!
We had a team commissioning at both of our Sunday services and it was a very sacred experience. My sense was that God really showed up at the service. It was not just a man thing. It was very powerful to me.
We had our final team meeting in between both services. Everyone got all paid up, we communicated final information and solidified final plans. We even had a few team building exercises. I felt excitement in the air and everyone seemed very cheerful and ready to go.
We will be pulling out of the church parking lot next Saturday 2/4/2006 at 6:00 am and if weather holds we will be pulling into our first destination about fourteen hours later. Now that is one long day! We have plenty of drivers so the long day should not be too bad on our drivers.
I will do my best to try to post some updates while we are on the trip. It appears that we will be having some laptops coming on the trip. We just have to hope and pray for connection along the way.
Please again, if you are the praying type keep us in your prayers.
Conservatives are happier than liberals…
Goerge Will documents again how conservatives (read Republicans) are happier than liberals.
Will is using a study by the Pew Research Center which is by no means a conservative think tank to make his point.
Basically poor conservatives are happier than poor liberals, rich conservatives are happier than rich liberals (note, George Soros is a screaming maniac). Conservative religious people are happier than liberal religious people etc.
The study really comes down to people that think that they can control and/or change their own circumstances in life are much happier.
This study repeats what many other studies have shown. So all my liberal readers, consider lightening up a little bit and become a conservative for the sake of your own happiness and ours.
I suppose my liberal readers will say conservatives are too stupid to be unhappy. Good luck with that line of argement. Remember when I think it was the New York Times published an article that conservatives were poor stupid people, they were innundated with faxes and emails from conservatives with their Ph.D.s and their tax statments showing both their brains and their earning power.
Dude just give up and become a conservative!!!
