But this thought in my head kept saying get out and shoot some night phototography tonight. I am learning to go ahead and get out and shoot whenever I am feeling inspired like that..

It turns out, it was a wonderfully successful creative time out shooting… This is one of the images I captured… I love the New England feel to this image with that gorgeous old church in the background…

Angelo

Listening to Manheim Steamroller: Silent Night

The other night I went out with the idea that I was going to capture Christmas lights in the city…
Instead I was accosted and blessed by a homeless person Angelo.

Let me fist set the stage. This morning at church we had as Pastor from New Orleans preach at my church… John Gerhardt is a friend because of a trip I had taken to help out in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

So John was preaching about the help they still need in New Orleans, but then he went on to preach about getting outside the walls of the church….

So I run into Angelo this evening… It is downtown St Paul, 19F and windy… He comes over and tells me he needs $7 to get into union gospel mission for the night.. My nature is to always be a bit skeptical at first but I was willing to take the time and hear is story… At the same time I was trying to determine if he was drug and/or alcohol free.

He started talking about his work… He is a construction worker that got injured.
He told me about his 12 yr old daughter that is loves and misses… This part of the discussion made him cry..
He told me about him being a writer… He said he got published at the local Minnesota Public Radio Web sight for his writing…
You can actually read about Angelo here…

He told how important it was just to have someone spend the time with him…
Especially on a cold winter night…

We ended our encounter praying together and then he was on his way to the Union Gospel Mission. I hope and pray.

Zion National Park

Through the Falls: Zion National Park
Originally uploaded by !!WaynePhotoGuy.

It was unanimous among the family members that Zion National Park was our favorite. It was a combination between the incredible views the great weather and the cool river running through it.

At this location I do not know if you can see but there is water falling right in the middle of the image. I am behind a waterfall that flows like a torrent in spring but during the summer it gets a bit dry.

There were actually two deer down in this area also and they did not seem to care at all that were were here.

At this time of the morning is was fresh and cool and you could indeed smell the water in the air… Later in the day it was 113F and you had to retreat to the cool of the stream below.

This series is from my family’s recent summer vacation. For our vacation we decided to make it extra special for our oldest son who just graduated from High School.
So for our trip we went to the amazingly breathtaking desert southwest www.americansouthwest.net/. Some of the most incredible National parks in the entire country are located in this region and many of those are concentrated in the State of Utah.

Our basic itinerary was drive from Minnesota to Denver Colorado to rent an RV.

Then drive to…
Arches National Park Utah www.nps.gov/arch
Bryce Canyon National Park Utah www.nps.gov/brca
Zion National Park Utah www.nps.gov/zion
Grand Canyon National Park North Rim www.nps.gov/archive/grca/grandcanyon/north-rim/
Four Corners Monument en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Corners_Monument
Mesa Verde National Park www.nps.gov/meve
and then on to our final destination before coming home of Colorado Springs Colorado.

This series attempts to document our trip.

This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.”

The genesis of a picture: This picture originated from a discussion with another flickrite Wans2pics . We were talking about how to do a portrait of a male well. She came up with the idea that it could be an action shot or some shot were the guy was going the thing that he loved. So while this is no longer a portrait, it is a male action shot. There Wanda, the picture is up!!!

How is this done? Take 10 million pictures of a ball coming in and sort through them…lol Or…

What is HDR or Tone Mapping?

This photo below is a fantastic example of the results of HDR or High Dynamic Range imaging.

A Golden Moment
Originally uploaded by !!WaynePhotoGuy.

This is a glowing golden image of the University of St Thomas chapel in St. Paul Mn.  Notice the incredible detail and it appears that the entire area is bathed in light.  While in reality it was quite dark in this church when this image was taken.  How can you get this kind of detail and light and color?

For this particular image I used a relatively new technique called HDR or High Dynamic Range.

HDR, or HDRI stands for High Dynamic Range Imaging.  It consists of taking several pictures of the exact same frame, each frame moving from a dark exposure to a light exposure, then combining the pictures.  This allows for a photo in which the darkest and lightest parts of the picture have detail , where a single photo of normal exposure won't have detail in these areas.

The specifics of the technique are…

  • Just like for all photography you must find a wonderful subject.  It is key to train your eye, meaning take the time to do the work to discover what makes an image interesting.  You know use the standard rules of art.  The rule of thirds, simplify, get closer.. etc.  Also remember the magic of light.  Good photographers are considered to be painters of light.
  • Get a tripod to stabilize you camera.  You are going to be taking multiple images of the same scene so you need your camera to be perfectly stabilized.
  • Figure out how to make your camera do bracketing.  This means figure out how to make your camera take the same image at different exposure settings so that with on push of the button you can take an image that is normal or middle exposure, images that are darker and images that are lighter.  Most modern DSLRs can do this automatically.  Some of the really cool cameras (like the Nikon D300) can take up to 9 images of differing exposure setting with one push of the button.
  • Either manually or with awesome software like photomatix merge your multiple images together into one fantastic image.
  • Do some final editing in photoshop or other photo editing tool.

You can see more examples of my HDR work here WaynePhotoGuy's HDR Collection.

Not everyone like this technique. Some people think it is not real or it makes a shot look too fake. Well, for my two cents, I love this technique. It makes many pictures look fantastic and magical.

The software I use is Photomatix from HDRSOFT. You can find more information here.

I am able to offer this software at a significant 15% discount.
