Listening to Manheim Steamroller: Silent Night

The other night I went out with the idea that I was going to capture Christmas lights in the city…
Instead I was accosted and blessed by a homeless person Angelo.

Let me fist set the stage. This morning at church we had as Pastor from New Orleans preach at my church… John Gerhardt is a friend because of a trip I had taken to help out in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

So John was preaching about the help they still need in New Orleans, but then he went on to preach about getting outside the walls of the church….

So I run into Angelo this evening… It is downtown St Paul, 19F and windy… He comes over and tells me he needs $7 to get into union gospel mission for the night.. My nature is to always be a bit skeptical at first but I was willing to take the time and hear is story… At the same time I was trying to determine if he was drug and/or alcohol free.

He started talking about his work… He is a construction worker that got injured.
He told me about his 12 yr old daughter that is loves and misses… This part of the discussion made him cry..
He told me about him being a writer… He said he got published at the local Minnesota Public Radio Web sight for his writing…
You can actually read about Angelo here…

He told how important it was just to have someone spend the time with him…
Especially on a cold winter night…

We ended our encounter praying together and then he was on his way to the Union Gospel Mission. I hope and pray.

To see my best work just go here.

About waynem

As a Minnesota based photographer and artist I have been greatly influenced by the Upper Midwest. I focus my skills and energies on portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, architectural and fine art work. My best work comes from images first painted in my mind. I mull over a prospective image for weeks or months, seeing it from different angles and perspectives, then finally deciding what to capture. The result is images that deeply touch people's emotions and powerfully evoke memories and dreams. My images are used commercially by companies and organizations ranging from Financial Services firms, mom and pop Ice Cream shops and The Basilica of St Mary to communicate their shared vision and values. Book and magazine publishers have featured my images on their covers. My photographs also grace and enhance the decor of many fine homes.

Wonderful picture. You’ve captured the torture in his eyes. I love how the black/white photo sets the mood. Plus, you did a wonderful thing for Angelo. May God be with you and him.
