Conservative values vs. liberal values

Today we found a must read commentary by Star Parker.  She says…

Conservatives, as I stated above, are clear about this. Traditional values we learn from the Bible. We can simply point to the Ten Commandments. And liberal values? The absolute here is that there are no absolutes. Everything is relative, and the only absolute is to welcome and tolerate everything.

I could not agree more…

About waynem

As a Minnesota based photographer and artist I have been greatly influenced by the Upper Midwest. I focus my skills and energies on portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, architectural and fine art work. My best work comes from images first painted in my mind. I mull over a prospective image for weeks or months, seeing it from different angles and perspectives, then finally deciding what to capture. The result is images that deeply touch people's emotions and powerfully evoke memories and dreams. My images are used commercially by companies and organizations ranging from Financial Services firms, mom and pop Ice Cream shops and The Basilica of St Mary to communicate their shared vision and values. Book and magazine publishers have featured my images on their covers. My photographs also grace and enhance the decor of many fine homes.

1 Response to Conservative values vs. liberal values

  1. Le Blue Dude says:

Liberal values are not about relativism. There is right and wrong. It’s just that there’s no monotone colors. It’s not do what you want, it’s “carefully weight, and process the subtle information in subtle ways, then chose the path that does the least harm”.
It’s not “Stone adulterous women” it’s not “Worship no false idols”. It’s not “Thou shalt not kill”. It’s “Thou shalt not kill except in self defense, and then only in conditions that warrant it given the intentions and weapons of the person you are defending against”. It is “thou shalt make an effort to be informed about the world around you, so long as said effort does not interfere with your interpersonal relations” And, at the same time “Thou shalt make an effort to get along with people, get to know people, and get close to people so long as said effort does not interfere with getting to know the world around you.”
The problem with Liberal Values is that most people can’t understand them. But they are a useful moral tool that SHOULD lead to more goodness in the world, if everyone understood and used them. A liberal understands their actions, and the consequences of their actions to the best extent possible, and choses the route that minimizes harm, while maximising gain. Even a Conservative makes liberal judgment calls, in disregarding parts of the bible that, say, call for stoning as a punishment for adultery. Conservative values are a good thing, because they’re simple. Liberal Values are a good thing because they’re complex. The best strategy is to find a mix of the two, and that mix will vary depending on the person and their nature. Some people do better on their own judgments. Others would rather rely on people they know are good to tell them what to do.
