Does Sex Sell?

Wendy Heath, 34 year old mom, realestate agent from Southern California decided to stand out in the realestate world.  She decided to use a billboard picture of herself in a bikini do to it.  She is now the sexy realtor.

Traffic at her web site www.teamheath.com exploded.  See story here.

My question for you is, does this matter?  What are the implications of this?  Why should we care?

It appears that sex does indeed sell.

About waynem

As a Minnesota based photographer and artist I have been greatly influenced by the Upper Midwest. I focus my skills and energies on portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, architectural and fine art work. My best work comes from images first painted in my mind. I mull over a prospective image for weeks or months, seeing it from different angles and perspectives, then finally deciding what to capture. The result is images that deeply touch people's emotions and powerfully evoke memories and dreams. My images are used commercially by companies and organizations ranging from Financial Services firms, mom and pop Ice Cream shops and The Basilica of St Mary to communicate their shared vision and values. Book and magazine publishers have featured my images on their covers. My photographs also grace and enhance the decor of many fine homes.

I say more power to her for having the guts to do it! In business, it seems anything goes and for women, it always and still is hard to break through the stigmas attached by society. Besides, if there is one thing we do know for sure it is that Sex Does Sell!

    Madeleine,
I have a question for you,
Did you answer in a completely utilitarian “whatever is useful” mentality
or a Biblical “whatever is right” mentality?
There is a significant difference here….

Of course sex sells, its used to sell everything from toothpaste to cars and now to real estate. But look at our society. What do we have to show for the “anything is acceptable if it makes money” mentality?
More sexual crimes than ever against women and CHILDREN, more marriages being ruined because of easily accessable porn, more young girls dying from anorexia because they have to have “the perfect body”.
You get the idea. I think this women will get lots of notice, but for all the wrong reasons. The message she’s sending is that if you are pretty and have a great body you are “good” or “preferred” compared to others. She’s right, in our society that’s what sells.
I’m an attractive woman but I am showing my children that good character and hard matter more than using your looks to get notice.
So, Thanks a lot, Wendy, for displaying your boobs on a billboard to sell real estate. I’m sure you’ll make plenty of money – after all who cares about good character and hard work these days?

    Layla,
You hit the nail on the head! That is the exact response I was looking for and you said it better than I could have…
    Thanks for the visit!
ps you also have a great blog!

I agree totally with Layla, sex sure does sell, but she is sending out the wrong message to women and young girls. Had she not had a toned body and big boobs it would not have worked out so well i’m sure, but that’s society.
