Happy TIME
Happy TIME
Part 1 of the series “Happy TIME”
Posted at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2005

The cover of the latest TIME magazine caught my attention as I sorted through the mail yesterday. “The Science of Happiness” it proudly proclaims, illustrated by an atomic happy face. Among the bullet points beneath the headline I saw something else that grabbed my interest: “Does God want us to be happy?” Now there’s something I’ve got to read, I thought. And so I did.

From Auschwitz to Iraq
Honoring Those Who Sacrifice

BreakPoint with Charles Colson

In 1941, a monk named Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take the place of another condemned prisoner at Auschwitz. Six decades later, a young man serving in Iraq—a soldier inspired by Father Kolbe—sacrificed his life when he volunteered to take the place of another soldier.

The Straight Scoop from Charlie Daniels
The Following letter was written by the famed singer song writer and posted to his web site in March 2002.
Details Here...

I've just returned from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Naval Air Station base where we did three shows for the troops and toured several locations around the post visiting with some of the finest military personnel on planet earth. The kids seemed to really enjoy the shows and especially liked "This Ain't No Rag, It's A Flag" and "In America". We had a great time with them.

We saw Camp X-Ray, where the Taliban detainees are being held only from a distance, but I picked up a lot of what's going on there from talking with a lot of different people.

For the first time, a court ordered a judgment against an abortion clinic for performing the procedure without informing the patient of psychological risks and increased risk of breast cancer.

The lawsuit against the All Women's Health Services clinic in Portland, Ore., was the second of its kind in the U.S. to be successfully prosecuted but the first to obtain a judgment.

Stop Playing Church
Too many so-called Christians are just "playing church." Yes, that sounds harsh, but unfortunately, it's all too true. When our actions don't match the guidelines set forth for Christians in the Bible, then we are reduced to simply feigning our religion or "playing church."

Jesus gave clear instruction about actions:

Marriage Protection Amendment To Be Introduced In U.S. House
Dear Friends,

Within a few days, the Marriage Protection Amendment will be introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. This constitutional amendment would make marriage legal only between one man and one woman.

Take Action!

Time is short, so please act quickly on this matter. We have made it very easy for you to contact your Representative and to ask him or her to co-sponsor the proposal.

A similar proposal gained a majority of votes in the House last year, but did not receive the super majority needed. Even if you contacted your Representative last year, it is necessary to do so ! again. This is a new Congress.

Last fall, 14,000,000 voters in 11 states voted for state constitutional amendments defining marriage as being only between one man and one woman. The average state vote was an overwhelming 67 percent. Thus far, a total of 17 states have banned homosexual marriage.

But the Marriage Protection Amendment is needed because a single federal judge could strike down all those state amendments. Indeed, a single federal judge could strike down all marriage laws in all 50 states! The MPA would be in the Constitution and prohibit a judge from doing this.

Sincerely,

Don

SOS Save Our Students
Minnesota Family Institute’s ‘SOS Save Our Students’ program counters gay agenda in schools
by Dave Bohon

Two-Thousand and Four was a busy year for the Minnesota Family Council in its campaign to protect and defend Minnesota’s families. And among the busiest was the staff of “SOS Save Our Students,” an ongoing project of the Minnesota Family Institute (MFI) that trains and encourages parents and other concerned citizens to battle the homosexual agenda in Minnesota’s schools. “This was the most productive year we’ve had since we initiated the program,” said Cindy Bailey, SOS director. “We conducted eight seminars across the state with over 500 attendees. That means 500 concerned adults were educated, encouraged, and sent back to their communities to help protect kids from deceptive pro-homosexual curriculum in the schools. Overall we estimate our SOS seminars impacted about 30 school districts with over 133,000 secondary students.”

Minnesota Legislative Preveiw 2005
Minnesota’s 2005 Legislature will have a different makeup from the one that dealt with some major fiscal and social issues last year. The solid conservative majority in the House of Representatives has narrowed to a razor-thin two votes. And while the DFL maintains a 36-31 majority in the Senate, a looming election in 2006 may influence the positions some erstwhile liberal lawmakers hold on issues dear to the hearts of their pro-family constituents.

Dennis Prager to speak at Minnesota Family Council annual banquet
by Dave Bohon

In one of his newspaper columns back in 2002, national talk show host Dennis Prager, himself a practicing Jew, offered a simple declaration that helps explain his popularity among conservative, Christian Americans. Addressing the liberal assumption that Jews ought to be deeply offended by the theology and doctrine of evangelical Christians, Prager boldly countered that “as a practicing, believing Jew … I am in no way offended, let alone frightened, by evangelical Christians who believe that it is necessary to have faith in Jesus in order to be saved.”

Some more bad news from our universities.

Harvard came out against seeking truth, and academics throughout America came to its support.

In a talk before fellow economists, Lawrence Summers, president of Harvard University and secretary of commerce under President Bill Clinton, addressed the question of why there were so many fewer women than men in science, math and engineering. He suggested that among other reasons, one might be that women's brains are less suited to these subjects than men's brains.

Massachusetts Citizens for Marriage
Massachusetts Citizens for Marriage

This organization is doing the hard work in Massachusetts and around the country to promote traditional marriage defined as one man and one woman. They are also doing the work to removed the corrupt judges that enables this process to move forward.

In the book, Libel by New York Times Edward J. Pawlick shows how the powerful owners of the New York Times and its subsidiary, the Boston Globe purposefully targeted Massachusetts as the first state to legalize gay marriage. The book tells all of the details of how this occurred.

I urge you to read the book, support the organization and get ready for the onslaught in your hometown.

The Terminal
In the movie The Terminal Tom Hanks plays an international traveler Viktor Navorski that gets stranded in John F. Kennedy International airport in New York City because while he was in flight, his home country experienced a coup and the government had fallen. Travel documents we no longer valid, so Viktor could not get to his dream destination of New York City. So, Viktor is stuck in the Terminal.

Viktor has experiences with a ladder-climbing bureaucrat that help to paint a clearer picture of who Viktor is and help to move the movie along.

Of course along the way, Viktor meets all kinds of people in the airport because it basically becomes a little city to him. He ends up living there several months. There are a few bits of humor along the way but this is certainly not an uproarious comedy. I found myself wishing there was more decent humor.

Of course there has to be the romantic interest and Catherine Zeta-Jones fits the bill nicely as Amelia if all you care about is looks, but along the way you find out that she is involved with a married man and she knows it is not good and wonderful to be involved like this but she cant seem to pull herself away because the “sex is so fantastic”. This really starts to show the “misguided ness” of some of the values of this movie.

We go on to see some of the underworld of the airport society and some of the corruption of that world. Yes I would agree that this is a pretty tame view of that world but it still a valueless view of this world.

The highlight of this movie is when Viktor stands up to the corrupt bureaucrat and in so doing becomes a bit of a cult figure among the airport workers. I must admit that I was warmed by this action also and I hoped that I could be brave in a similar situation.

I was a bit dismayed by the revelation of the purpose of Viktor’s trip to Big Apple in the first place. Viktor’s father was a huge jazz fan and he was collecting signatures of jazz greats. Viktor’s father had died without the final signature so Viktor was going to get that for him. I understand the concept of honoring ones father, but to honor him in such a meaningless way seems totally crazy to me.

This crazy way honoring ones father were getting the autograph became the purpose in life, made me think of another Tom Hanks movie “Castaway”. That movie for me painted a picture of complete hopelessness and despair and a view that life has no purpose at all.

These underlying themes make it a bit difficult for me to watch Tom Hanks movies.

Have a great day!

Leave Comments Please...
Hey Readers,
I really want this blog to be a conversation between you and me, and like I said in the beginning, I want to be like Dennis Prager and get clarity in our conversations not agreement. I am looking for the truth. I am looking to learn.

By the votes that I am receiving on the story "What do Catholics believe about Scripture???", it appears that many of you don’t like the story or hate the story.

I need to know why.

I am way off base?
Am I totally whacked?
Did I hit to close to home?

Please leave comments on the stories that give you a passionate reaction.

Believe it or not, I take criticism pretty well, especially if done with respect and gentleness.

Have a great day!

Closing Prayer, Bush's 2nd Inarguration: Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell
Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, senior pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston, delivered the benediction prayer at the close of President Bush's inauguration January 20. Here is a transcript:

Oh Lord God Almighty, the supply and supplier of faith and freedom, how excellent is Your name in all the earth. You are great and greatly to be praised. God, as we conclude this 55th inaugural ceremony, we conclude it with an attitude of thanksgiving. Thank You for protecting America's borders. After all, the Psalmist reminds us, unless You, O God, guard the territory, our efforts will be in vain.

Thank You for our armed service personnel. And it is with unswerving thanksgiving that we pause to remember the persons who have made the ultimate sacrifice to help ensure America's safety. Thank You, O God, for surrounding our personnel, their families, their friends and our allies with Your favor and Your faithfulness.

Deploy Your hosts from heaven so that Your will for America will be performed on earth as it is already perfected in heaven. I confess that Your face will shine upon the United States of America, granting us social peace and economic prosperity, particularly for the weary and the poor.

I also confess, God, that each American's latter days will be better than their former days. Let it be unto us according to Your Word.

Rally the Republicans, the Democrats and the Independents around Your common good so that America will truly become one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty, justice and equal opportunity for all -- including the least, the last and the lost.

Bless every elected official right now. God, I declare Your blessings to shower upon our president, George W. Bush. Bless him, his family and his administration. I once again declare that no weapon formed against them shall prosper.

God, forgive us for becoming so ensnarled in petty partisan politics that we miss Your glory and block our purpose. Deliver us from the evil one, from evil itself and from the mere appearance of evil.

Give us clean hearts, so that we might have clean agendas, clean priorities and programs and even clean financial statements.

Now, unto You, O God, the One who always has been and always will be, the one King of kings and the true power broker, we glorify and honor You.

Respecting persons of all faiths, I humbly submit this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
