James Lesson 5: Faith seen by what you do (2: 14-26)
SSEFC ABF – Winter 2005
Lesson 5 – James 2: 14-26

Main Thought
The genuiness of a person’s profession in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord is evidenced more by what a person does than by what he claims.

James 2: 14–26 Production of Works

James 2: 14-17 Dead Faith

Even in the early church there were those who claimed they had saving faith yet did not possess salvation.
People with dead faith substitute words for deeds.

James Lesson 4: Faith Tested by Reaction to Partiality (2:1-13)
James:Tests of a Living Faith

Faith Tested by Reaction to Partiality (2:1-13)

Section Summary
Human beings are not inclined to be impartial, but God is. Whether it concerns salvation, judgement, or discipline, God’s standard is the same. He deals entirely with the inner person with total impartiality, and so should we.

Outline
I. The Principle (1)

My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.

The command here is in the present tense imperative, which forbids a practice that was already in progress. The emphasis on “glorious” heightens the inconsistency of allowing favoritism in the assembly of those who name Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

An attitude of personal favoritism (4382): Lifting up one’s face with the idea of judging by appearance and giving special favor and respect on that basis. Judging purely on a superficial level. Used only in Christian writings, most likely because favoritism was such an accepted part of most ancient societies, it didn’t even need to be called out. (c.f. Acts 10:34, James 2:9)

James Lesson 3: Faith Tested by Response to the Word (1:19-27)
James:Tests of a Living Faith

Faith Tested by Response to the Word (1:19-27)

Section Summary
When the true disciple hears God’s Word, there is an affection for its truth and a desire in his heart to obey it.

Outline
This passage is divided into two parts; how to receive the Word and how to apply the Word. Like the rest of the Book of James, it is easy to understand what the author is exhorting us to do by looking at the verbs.

Getting It: Power versus Influence
BreakPoint with Charles Colson
Commentary #050203 - 02/03/2005

Getting It
Power versus Influence

Note: This commentary was delivered by Prison Fellowship President Mark Earley.

Since the 2004 election, the American media are trying to understand religion's role in the lives of Americans. It's a difficult task for them because, as CNN's William Schneider once put it, "the press … just doesn't get religion."

STATUE IN IRAQ

THE NEW BRONZE STATUE IN IRAQ

THIS IS GREAT! and something every American should see. Be sure to read the information below.....

This statue currently stands outside the Iraqi palace, now home to the 4th Infantry division.  It will eventually be shipped home and put in the memorial museum in Fort Hood,Texas.

The statue was created by an Iraqi artist named Kalat, who for years was forced by Saddam Hussein to make the many hundreds of bronze busts of Saddam that dotted Baghdad.

Kalat was so grateful for the Americans liberation of his country; he melted 3 of the heads of the fallen Saddam and made the statue as a memorial to the American soldiers and their fallen warriors.  Kalat worked on this memorial night and day for several months.

To the left of the kneeling soldier is a small Iraqi girl giving the soldier comfort as he mourns the loss of his comrade in arms.

Do you know why we don't hear about this in the news?  Because it is heart warming and praise worthy.  The media avoids it because it does not have the shock effect that a flashed breast or controversy of politics does.  But we can do something about it.  We can pass this along to as many people as we can in honor of all our brave military who is making a difference. Thank you!!

Send this to everyone in your address book!  Pray for and support our military men and women!

A Few Truths
1. No one can ruin your day without YOUR permission.
2. Most people will be about as happy as they decide to be.
3. Others can stop you temporarily, but only you can do it permanently.
4. Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.
5. Success stops when you do.
6. When your ship comes in.... make sure you are willing to unload it.
7. You will never "have it all together."
8. Life is a journey.... not a destination. Enjoy the trip!
9. The biggest lie on the planet: "When I get what I want, I will be happy."
10. The best way to escape your problem is to solve it.
11. I've learned that ultimately 'takers' lose and 'givers' win.
12. Life's precious moments don't have value, unless they are shared.
13. If you don't start, it's certain you won't arrive.
14. We often fear the thing we want the most.
15. Everyone hears what you say. Friends listen to what you have to say. Best friends listen to what you don't say!

Enjoy your life
I'll be happy when...

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we are able to go on a nice vacation or when we retire. The truth is there's no better time to be happy than right now.
If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges.

It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with ... and remember that time waits for no one.

So, stop waiting ...
Until your car or home is paid off.
Until you get a new car or home.
Until your kids leave the house.
Until you go back to school.
Until you finish school.
Until you lose 10 lbs.
Until you gain 10 lbs.
Until you get married.
Until you get a divorce.
Until you have kids.
Until you retire.
Until summer..
Until spring.
Until winter.
Until fall.
Until you die.

There is no better time than right now to be happy. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, and, dance like no one's watching.

Most touching part of State of the Union
The most touching moment of the State of the Union address was when the mother of fallen Marine Sergeant Byron Norwood embraced Safia Taleb al-Souhail an Iraqi woman who just voted for the first time. al-Souhail's father had been killed by Saddam Hussein 15 years earlier during his reign of terror.

Transcript: President Bush's State of the Union address on Feb. 02, 2005
Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, Members of Congress, fellow citizens:

As a new Congress gathers, all of us in the elected branches of government share a great privilege: we have been placed in office by the votes of the people we serve. And tonight that is a privilege we share with newly elected leaders of Afghanistan, the Palestinian territories, Ukraine, and a free and sovereign Iraq.

Two weeks ago, I stood on the steps of this Capitol and renewed the commitment of our Nation to the guiding ideal of liberty for all. This evening I will set forth policies to advance that ideal at home and around the world.

Back to work: Catholics and Evangelicals
The biggest part of our house painting project is complete. We have primed and painted an entire two story house. We still have to do all of the staining and varnishing but that is easy in comparison. Hew, my body is killing me. Boy is my wife a trooper! She puts up with this and she works her hind end off. Thanks honey.

Anyway, it is time to get back to work, no not with my day job but on this blog. I started this blog to discuss issues between Catholics and Evangelicals and other issues of faith. It is time to get busy on that topic.

Freedoms Lost Under G.W. Bush
By Chuck Baldwin
February 1, 2005

Supporters and apologists for President G.W. Bush will often
assail my assertion that the Bush administration has done more to
dismantle constitutional protections of our liberties than any
president in modern memory. It seems that these people believe
that until federal Storm Troopers knock down the doors of their
homes and drag them off to the gulags, they have lost no freedoms.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

First week in February
Readers,
You can't believe how thrilled I am with all of the great response I have been receiving about this blog. Thank you so much for your kind words and support.

The first week of February, there will be very little new content on the blog. You see, we are building a house and one of the things that we are doing in the process, is painting the entire inside of the house. That includes, priming, painting and staining and varnishing the woodwork. This task is going to completely consume us this next week.

The result of the situation is that I will be blogging very little. I feel like I will be letting you down. Worse yet, I have not been able to find a replacement either.

Man, falling down on the job.

I guess it is slightly possible that some issue will hit me so hard I will just have to write about but the chances of that are relatively slim.

I just wanted to communicate that with all of your my faithful readers. Don’t think that I have given up. I hope to be back in full force in about a week.

In the mean time, keep up the fight!

Happy Blogging,

Wayne
