01/22/2005: "Birds Eye View of the Bush 2nd Inauguration"

This week I had the opportunity to take part in a piece of American History. While sitting at work all day tied up with meetings I grew increasingly depressed I was just a few short miles from the steps of the US Capital where President George W. Bush was being sworn in for his 2nd term as the President of the United States, yet I was missing it all. Very few people around the office even mentioned what was going on. One person mentioned that I could go to a conference area in the building and watch the activities on TV, but I could have done that if I was still living in AZ.

Then late in the afternoon a call came in from a friend. My friend, a very active member of the Democratic Party, knowing how important attending an event like this would be to me had been making some calls to see what she could do. As it turns out she was able to procure two tickets to the Democracy Ball at the Washington, DC Convention Center, the official ball for the states of AZ, CA, ND, SD, KY, NC, and SC.

         Bush 2nd Inauguration

After rushing around feverishly to pick up a tuxedo, and having to drive way around the Capital that still had the bleachers, banners and flags illuminated reminding all of what had just occurred several hours earlier we arrived at the convention center. The security was impressive. Police departments from all over the country had sent representatives, including officers from Chicago with their distinctive checkered bands on their hats, or officers from Littleton, CO who still bear the memories of what happened at Columbine High.

Helicopters hovered over head and sirens blared around the city as every street near by was blocked off and attended by Homeland Security members from the Secret Service or Federal Protective Services. I wish the security officers from TSA at the airports around the country could have seen this model of efficiency as mobs of people were processed quickly through the metal detectors.

This enormous conference space was filled with everything from old women in wheel chairs with jewels dripping off their necks, to cadets from West Point and the Citadel. While not the craziest party I have ever been to, you could definitely feel the anticipation in the room for the time that “W” would show up. Around 9:45 pm we noticed that an attendant had walked out and placed the Presidential Seal on the podium as you may know, but is required to be hanging on any podium prior to when the President enters to address an audience.

Everyone began crowding toward the stage and after a brief introduction George and Laura Bush Walked out on stage. After briefly addressing the crowd President Bush invited the first lady to join him in an Inaugural dance with their Democracy Ball hosts. While being slightly disappointed that the Govonator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, did not make it to the official ball for CA, it was still a great evening.

While grabbing a late bite to eat and sitting in the window at the restaurant and still wearing my tux some protestors began targeting me. It became evident to me during dinner that the grubby, long haired, pierced nosed, sign toting protestors, and the very attractive woman sitting across the table from me had some in common. In their blaming President Bush for the worlds problems, and crying over the spilled milk that is John Kerry, they forgot to appreciate this great event, and be thankful for what we have as a country, and that we don’t have to worry about a car bomb as we approach the polling booth like those going to the polls in Iraq in the next few days.
